Of the countries we have checked so far, only France has more starred restaurants with somewhere to sleep. Some are grand hotels, on the Amalfi Coast, the lakes and in Rome; many more are country houses: a relais among the vines in Piedmont or Tuscany, a mountain hotel in South Tyrol, a locanda with a few rooms above the dining room. Those that sell dinner and a room together call it a “soggiorno gourmet” or simply “cena e pernottamento”. These are the hotels with Michelin star restaurants in Italy: 137 starred restaurants inside a hotel you can book. In Rome there are 8, led by the three-star La Pergola on the roof of the Rome Cavalieri and Imàgo at the Hassler above the Spanish Steps. Of the three-stars, Da Vittorio has ten rooms at La Dimora beside the restaurant, Villa Crespi is a Moorish-style villa with 14 suites, Reale has ten rooms in Casadonna, a former monastery in Castel di Sangro, and La Rei Natura is at the Il Boscareto resort in Serralunga d’Alba. On Lake Como, Al Lago is at Il Sereno; in Venice, Oro is at the Belmond Cipriani and Venissa has rooms on the island of Mazzorbo. South Tyrol has 14, most of them family-run mountain and spa hotels.

The Amalfi Coast and Sorrento peninsula have more starred hotel restaurants than anywhere else in Italy outside the big cities. Among the Michelin star hotels in the Amalfi Coast towns, Glicine is at the clifftop Hotel Santa Caterina in Amalfi, Rossellinis at Palazzo Avino in Ravello, Zass at Il San Pietro di Positano, Un Piano nel Cielo at Casa Angelina in Praiano and Il Flauto di Pan at Villa Cimbrone. Most close for the winter, roughly from November to March, so check the dates before you plan.

Casa Qafiz in Calabria lets its rooms only to guests with a table at the restaurant.

20 of the 159 publish a price for a stay with dinner. For one night for two, with the tasting menu and breakfast, half of them cost between €500 and €900 (about $565 to $1,020). At the low end are country restaurants: La Bandiera at €290 for two, Antonello Colonna’s resort near Rome from €445 midweek and Dattilo in Calabria from €500. Terra in South Tyrol, which says it is the highest two-star restaurant in Italy, starts at €375 a person with its ten-course menu. At the top, George on the roof of Grand Hotel Parker’s in Naples starts at €1,337 for two in a sea-view room.

Check three things before you book. First, the restaurant: several resort hotels sell half board at another of their restaurants, which the tables leave out unless the starred one is named. Second, the season: the coast, lake and mountain hotels close for months at a time. Third, how the price is given: South Tyrol’s hotels often price per person, for two sharing.

How to book a stay at a Michelin star restaurant in Italy

Book the room on the hotel’s or restaurant’s own website, or by email where it says so: several small locande, Dattilo among them, take bookings only that way, and some, like La Bandiera and Casa Qafiz, sell a room only with a table. Ask which nights the restaurant is open, as many close one or two days a week and the packages follow. Book well ahead for summer on the coast and the lakes, and expect to add the tourist tax, a few euros a person a night.
