Are There Michelin Star Restaurants in Ottawa, Calgary or Halifax?

Updated October 9, 2026 · Star counts and prices checked October 2026

No. Ottawa, Calgary, Halifax, Edmonton and Winnipeg have no Michelin star restaurants, because Canada’s three MICHELIN Guides cover only Toronto & Region, Québec and Vancouver. All 39 of Canada’s starred restaurants are in those three areas. The nearest to Ottawa are in Montréal, about 100 miles (165 km) away.

Here is how many Michelin star restaurants Canada has and where, why the rest of the country has none, how the best restaurants in Ottawa, Calgary and Halifax are ranked instead, and where each city’s nearest stars are, with their prices.

How many Michelin star restaurants are in Canada?

39: 36 one-star and 3 two-star. They’re spread across three guides: Toronto & Region in Ontario (15), Québec (13) and Vancouver in British Columbia (11). Toronto and Vancouver got their first guides in 2022 and Québec followed in 2025, and all three have revealed their 2026 stars: Québec on May 6, Toronto on September 22 and Vancouver on October 6. Counting Bib Gourmands and recommended restaurants, the three guides list about 300 restaurants in all. Every one of the starred ones is on our page for Michelin star restaurants in Canada, with dinner, lunch and wine pairing prices.

The guides cover some places outside the big cities: Toronto’s grew into “Toronto & Region” in 2024 and now reaches the Niagara wine country, and Québec’s covers the whole province, down to Rimouski on the St. Lawrence. But no MICHELIN Guide in Canada covers Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, the Atlantic provinces, or Ontario beyond the Toronto region. We checked the MICHELIN Guide’s own listings on 9 October 2026.

Are there Michelin star restaurants in Ottawa?

No. Ottawa is in Ontario, but well outside the Toronto & Region guide, and although Gatineau, across the river, is in Québec, the Québec guide lists no restaurant there. The nearest restaurant in any MICHELIN Guide is about 70 miles (115 km) away in Mont-Tremblant. Ottawa’s best restaurants are ranked instead by Canada’s 100 Best, a national list drawn up by a panel of food writers and chefs: in 2026 Atelier was the city’s highest entry at No. 54, followed by Antheia at No. 76 and Arlo at No. 77.

The nearest Michelin stars are in Montréal, about two hours’ drive east: 5 starred restaurants, with the cheapest dinner menu at Mastard, CA$90 (about $65). See our page for Michelin star restaurants in Montréal.

Are there Michelin star restaurants in Calgary?

No, and none anywhere in Alberta, since no MICHELIN Guide covers the province. Calgary’s highest entry on Canada’s 100 Best in 2026 was Eight, at No. 9, ahead of DOPO (No. 28), River Café (No. 42), Bar Gigi, Gatsby’s and Nupo, and Änkôr in Canmore, near Banff, was No. 25. Michelin does rate Alberta hotels: six hold MICHELIN Keys, including The Dorian in Calgary, but a Key rates the whole stay, not the restaurant.

The nearest stars to Calgary are in Vancouver, about an hour and a half’s flight away: 11 starred restaurants, with the cheapest dinner menu at St. Lawrence, CA$135 (about $95). See our page for Michelin star restaurants in Vancouver.

Are there Michelin star restaurants in Halifax?

No. Nova Scotia, like the rest of Atlantic Canada, has no MICHELIN Guide. Halifax’s highest entry on Canada’s 100 Best in 2026 was Mystic, at No. 16. The nearest Michelin star to Halifax is at Narval in Rimouski, Québec, about 350 miles (570 km) away as the crow flies, where the tasting menu costs CA$135 (about $95). Québec City, a short flight from Halifax, has 6 starred restaurants: see Michelin star restaurants in Québec City.

Are there Michelin star restaurants in Edmonton or Winnipeg?

No. Neither city has a Michelin star, as no guide covers Alberta or Manitoba. From Edmonton, the nearest stars are in Vancouver; from Winnipeg, they’re farther still, in the Toronto region or in Chicago. Wherever you are in Canada, Near me lists every starred restaurant within the distance you choose, nearest first, with their prices.

Will more Canadian cities get Michelin stars?

Michelin hasn’t announced a guide for Ottawa, Alberta or Atlantic Canada. Its Canadian guides so far have come with backing from tourism bodies in each city or province, and the recent growth has been within existing guides, as when Toronto’s grew into Toronto & Region. If a new Canadian guide is announced, we’ll update this page straight away. Our calendar of MICHELIN Guide ceremonies shows when each guide reveals its stars.
