Starred without a tasting menu
Some of London’s starred restaurants have no tasting menu at all, and you order à la carte as in any restaurant. The Kerfield Arms in Camberwell won its star in February 2026 as a neighbourhood pub. St John in Smithfield, Brat in Shoreditch and Mountain in Soho serve à la carte, with mains from about £30 (about $40) at St John. At two-star Trivet, a meal can be two courses from the à la carte.
How to keep the bill down
- Go midweek at lunch. Many set lunches run on weekdays only.
- Add the service charge. London menu prices include VAT, but most restaurants add 12.5% to 15% service on top. Our London page adds it for you.
- Skip the pairing. A wine pairing often costs as much as the food. A glass or two of wine, or a soft pairing, costs far less.
- Sit at the bar. A few restaurants run cheaper bar or counter menus.
